Eligibility and legal note

The B+E Test Changed. Physics Did Not.

Many drivers no longer need a separate B+E test to tow within the licence rules, but legal entitlement is not the same as safe control. The session starts with the driver, vehicle, towbar and trailer, because a confident driver can still be unsafe if the plated weights, tyres, mirrors or breakaway cable are wrong.

Training is available for private and trade drivers inside the Norwich operating area. Own vehicle and trailer assessments cost £75 for 75 minutes when the equipment is lawful and roadworthy. If anything is unsafe, the road section does not happen.

Pre-drive inspection

Every Session Starts With The Rig Standing Still.

  • Licence category and driver eyesight check.
  • Gross vehicle weight, trailer plate and combined train weight.
  • Nose load, breakaway cable, jockey wheel and coupling lock.
  • Tyres, pressures, lights, mirrors and towbar plate.
  • Load security, balance and anything that can move under braking.

“Most towing problems start before the wheels move.”

Proud job aside

A Three Metre Pitch At The Royal Norfolk Show.

One of Mark’s favourite towing jobs was a mobile coffee trailer getting ready for its first Royal Norfolk Show run. The owner could drive perfectly well, but the trailer made every yard entrance feel narrower than it was and the show pitch allowed about three metres, no banksman, and no appetite for a public twelve-point shuffle. They spent the first part checking the rig properly, then built the reverse from straight lines into a shallow bend, then into the exact sort of pitch the trailer would need. By the end, the owner was not performing a trick. She understood where the trailer was going before it got there.

Unsafe equipment refusal

Training Stops If The Rig Is Not Lawful.

Unsafe towbar or plate

No road work if the towbar rating is unclear, damaged or unsuitable.

Tyres, lights or mirrors fail

The trailer must be visible, lit and roadworthy before moving.

Weights do not match

Vehicle, trailer, load and driver entitlement must fit the legal limits.

High-speed work too soon

No motorway or high-speed trailer work until coupling, mirrors, braking distance and dual carriageway control are secure.
